Men arrested in Laois over cross border terror investigation due in court

Two men who were arrested in Laois in connection with a cross border terrorism related investigation are due in court this morning. 

Gardaí said the two men, who are aged in their 40s and 30s, have now been charged.

The men were arrested by Laois gardai on Wednesday when suspicious items were recovered from a car which had been searched in the Portlaoise area. The men are suspected of being involved with a far right group. 

Following their arrests in Laois, the Garda Special Detective Unit took over the investigation and contacted the Police Service of Northern Ireland(PSNI).

The PSNI conducted a search at a property in Northern Ireland and discovered a number of suspicious items and electronic equipment. A number of homes in the area had to be evacuated during the operation. 

The two men are due to appear before Tullamore District Court this morning at 10:30am.
