The Department of Agriculture has confirmed bird flu was detected in a Turkey Farm in Laois at the weekend.

It’s reported that the turkey farm has up to 30,000 birds making it the largest flock to be hit by bird flu in the Republic of Ireland this year.

It’s the fourth confirmed case of an avian influenza outbreak in a poultry flock in the Republic of Ireland since November 4 and there have been two confirmed cases in Northern Ireland.

A three kilometre protection zone and ten kilometre surveillance zone have been set up around the site in Laois which is close to the Kildare border near Monasterevin.

The Department of Agriculture said the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in a turkey flock in Laois on November 21.

It follows an outbreak in a turkey flock in Co. Monaghan on November 10 and in a turkey flock in Meath on November 5 and in Carlow on November 4.

The Department of Agriculture previously reminded all flock owners, regardless of the flock size, to: Comply fully with the housing and biosecurity regulations,  remain vigilant for sign of disease, and to  report any suspicions of avian influenza to their local regional veterinary office, or if outside business hours, to contact the National Disease Emergency Hotline on 01 492 8026.

Compulsory biosecurity measures came into effect on Saturday, November 1, 2025. They are designed to prevent outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in poultry and captive birds. These regulations require specific biosecurity measures to be implemented by the keepers of all poultry (and other captive bird) flocks, irrespective of size, to help mitigate the risk of the virus, and additional enhanced biosecurity measures that must be implemented in flocks of 350 birds or more.
