Laois Gardaí searched a house and recovered alcohol, baby powder, clothing and cosmetics worth thousands of euros from suspected prolific thieves in Portlaoise.

"An Gardaí attached to the local Retail Crime Unit, working under Operation Táirge, have achieved a significant success following the arrest and charging of two suspected prolific retail theft offenders this week," gardaí said.

Gardaí said "as part of a follow-up investigation, a search warrant was executed at a residential property in Portlaoise, resulting in the recovery of a large volume of suspected stolen goods, with an estimated value in excess of €3,000. Items recovered include high-value retail stock such as perfumes, clothing, alcohol, baby products and household goods. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the affected retailers."

Both suspects have been formally charged and are now before the courts, with Gardaí also continuing further investigative actions in other locations.

“This operation demonstrates the resolve and persistence of local Gardaí in tackling organised retail theft, which has a serious impact on businesses, staff and local communities,” Gardaí said.

They commended the exceptional work by the members involved, whose proactive policing is delivering real results for the public.

Gardaí again reminded retailers to report all theft incidents promptly, as timely information remains critical to disrupting organised activity.
