Design options for new library

Several tenders have been submitted to Laois County Council, for architectural and design services for the new Portlaoise Library.

“Tenders have now been examined and an appointment will be made very shortly. We will expedite that as quickly as we can, after the standstill period,” said Chief Executive John Mulholland.

Cllr and Portlaoise library employee, Mary Sweeney welcomed the progress.

“I am happy to see it moving on another little step, it’s good news,” she said.

“Please keep us informed of progress, I was asked five times yesterday at the festival, what are we going to do with Shaws,” added Cllr Willie Aird.

The new library is to be built in the old Shaws shop on lower Main Street, with the cost of €3.2million jointly paid by the council and the government.

County hall bought it from Shaws for €450,000 in 2013. Construction is scheduled to start in 2017.
