s part of this year’s Culture Night on September 16, there’s a night of traditional music planned in the environs of The Malthouse in Stradbally.
The Malthouse Stradbally Concert will feature New Road, with special guests Leonard Podolak and Cathy Jordan. There will also be a craft fair before the evening’s musical entertainment begins.
This promises to be a very special performance by some of Ireland and Canada’s finest trad musicians, featuring Grammy award nominated Leonard Podolak (6 string banjo) Cathy Jordan (vocals), Leonard Barry (uilleann pipes, whistles), Rick Epping (harmonica, concertina, 5-string banjo, jaw harp, vocals), Andy Morrow (fiddle) and Shane McGowan (guitar). P
They will play a folk-trad fusion, performing songs from the critically acclaimed album ‘Stone Walls & Street Lights.’
The concert will run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with the craft fair taking place before it at 5.30pm.
Their previous album ‘Wider Horizons Beckon Here’, was described as a rich mix of tunes gathered together from Sliabh Luachra, Leitrim and as far afield as the Carolinas and Appalachia.
Rick Epping’s faultless harmonica lines make the cosiest of bedfellows for Barry’s pipes, and the addition of Andy Morrow’s fiddle conspire to create a glorious, unfettered soundscape.
Meanwhile in Spink, there’s an evening of traditional Irish craic taking place on Culture Night.
This is a chance to enjoy an evening of traditional Irish music, singing, storytelling, and dancing in the beautiful community hall in Spink, home of the regular Comhaltas music classes down through the years.
The Spink traditional evening will run from 7.30pm - 9.30pm.
There’s a chance to experience the work of a bestselling author as read by the author herself, when Anna McPartlin presents a special extract from her latest novel at Portlaoise Library as part of Culture Night.
Anna’s debut novel Pack Up The Moon was published in January 2006, and went on to be a best seller both here in Ireland and abroad.
Since then Anna’s written five more bestselling novels. Anna will read from her latest title ‘Somewhere Inside Of Happy’, on Culture Night, Friday, September 16, at Portlaoise Library at 7pm.
