A female garda and a garda sergeant were both assaulted at the weekend in Portlaoise Garda Station, by a local man who had been arrested for drink driving.

The assaults, which left both gardaí requiring medical attention, took place in Portlaoise Garda Station in the early hours of Sunday, October 2.

Their assailant was a 42-year-old man from the local area, who was brought to the station to be processed for drink driving, having been arrested on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise.

While he was being processed at the station, the man assaulted the female garda by punching her to the face and kicking her legs, and assaulted the male garda sergeant by administering punches, kicks and headbutts.

The vicious attack happened at around 3.30am.

A garda spokesperson has confirmed to the Leinster Express that both officers received minor injuries, including soft tissue damage and bruises.

Fortunately, neither garda had to be hospitalised, although both received medical attention at the garda station.

The garda spokesperson has said that a file is now being prepared for the director of public prosecutions.

This is the latest such attack against the gardaí, after a garda was viciously assaulted in the public office of the garda station just over a month ago.
