A local woman in her 50s is in a critical condition after the car she was driving collided head-on with a bin lorry.
The horrific smash happened on Tuesday, October 18, at around 4.30pm as the woman was travelling from Portlaoise to Portarlington, with two teenaged passengers.
A garda spokesperson has confirmed that she had just reached the last roundabout outside Portlaoise when the car she was driving, a Hyundai, veered into the path of the oncoming bin lorry causing a frontal collision between the driver’s side of each vehicle.
The woman had to be airlifted to Tallaght Hospital in a critical condition and was subsequently moved to Beaumont Hospital where she remains in a critical condition. The garda spokesperson said that the woman was due to undergo an operation today (Wednesday, October 19).
The driver of the bin lorry was taken to the Midlands Hospital in Portlaoise in a state of shock, and one of the teenaged occupants of the woman’s car was also taken to the local hospital as a precaution.
The spokesperson revealed that road conditions were good, with good weather and clear visibility. A forensic team examined the scene and both vehicles were taken away for a PSV examination.
