A Portlaoise woman claimed she stole skincare products to sell on in an attempt to get money to buy her son a birthday present.
At last week’ sitting of the district court in Portlaoise, Jean Nevin (33), with an address at 7 Clonroosk View, Portlaoise, was charged with one count of theft.
Inspector Jer Glavin gave evidence that the accused entered Tesco, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise, on September 30 this year, where she stole skincare items worth €44.77.
The property was recovered, said the inspector.
Nevin had 23 previous convictions.
Defence, Ms Louise Troy told the court that her client had five children.
Nevin had a lot of money worries at the time, and was short of money to purchase back to school items for her children, said Ms Troy.
To this, Judge Catherine Staines pointed out that the stolen property was not back to school items, but skincare products.
Ms Troy replied that her client had gone to steal the items to sell on to buy her son a birthday present.
“She’s very embarrassed by what she’s done, and she’s asking for leniency,” concluded defence.
Judge Staines convicted and fined Nevin €100.
