Court - Tried to bring phone into jail

A 21-year-old woman has been given the benefit of the probation act for trying to smuggle a phone into the Midlands Prison.

Garda William Whelan gave evidence that Aoife McHale (21), Wexford, was detected at the Midlands Prison on September 30 this year, attempting to bring in a mobile phone.

She had no previous convictions.

Garda Whelan said that “there may have been pressure put on her” to bring the phone in.

Defence, Ms Louise Troy said that her client knew someone in the prison.

Garda Whelan concurred, but said that “as usual, she can’t say” who she was bringing the phone in for.

Judge Catherine Staines said she would give the accused an opportunity on this occasion and applied the probation act, section 1.1.
