One Laois school with ASTI membership manages to stay open as TUI provide supervision cover

Mountmellick Community School remains open but schools in Portlaoise, Portarlington and Mountmellick are shut

One Laois secondary school where teachers are engaged in industrial action has managed to open while teachers have not been locked out of any schools in the county.

Mountmellick Community School opened for students today despite the fact that ASTI teachers have refused to carry out supervision or substitution duties. The school has been able to open because half the school's teachers are Teachers Union of Ireland members.

However, thousands of other pupils are not at school in Laois because schools did not open on health and safety grounds. These are: Scoil Chríost Rí and Portlaoise CBS both Portlaoise; Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington; Heywood College, Ballinakill; Mountrath Community School.

No schools were reported to have locked out teachers who are taking part in the industrial action.

If no solution is found today between the ASTI and the Department of Education, all schools including Mountmellick, will close tomorrow as the ASTI is due to take more industrial action.

It is not clear what schools will do after Wednesday.
