A Mountrath man who told the district court that he stole a piece of tinfoil and a number of torches in order to solve a problem with his car battery has been placed on probation.
Dermot O’Brien (32), Rushall, Mountrath, stole the items from the Campus Oil Filling Station in Portlaoise on July 22 this year.
When the case first came before the court in September, defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had a difficulty with the battery in his car and wanted to use the tinfoil to create a breaker with the battery.
The case was adjourned in September for a probation report.
When the case returned last week, Judge Staines said she would place the accused on six months’ probation.
As the accused was not in court, the matter was put back to November 10.
