Mountmellick's towering tree lights up for Christmas
Christmas kicks off in Mountmellick with the official lighting up of the town's famed 65ft Christmas tree in O'Connell Square, on the same night as the Late Late Toy Show this year.
The towering tree, with its moving lights and a handmade crib is a much loved feature of the town, run by a volunteer committee who also enlist Santa to hand out presents to every child under 10, and thousands of euros worth of fuel to the elderly.
This year the official light up time is 8pm on Friday December 2, when the tree will be blessed, the pipe band will play, and a speech will be heard from chairman Brian Lynch, who with his brother Ger have organised the tradition for most of their lives.
The annual fundraising Church Gate Collection takes place this weekend November 26 and 27, and the Flag Day and door-to-door collection will be on December 2 and 3, while Santa will meet the boys and girls at the Community Arts Centre on December 18.
Mountmellick Christmas Fair takes place at the foot of the tree on Sunday December 4.
