A Slovakian national shoplifted flowers to put on his mother’s grave, the district court heard.
Stefan Lakatos (27), 22 Marina Court, Athy, was charged with theft, from Tesco, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise, on November 2 this year.
He had three previous convictions for theft.
Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client, a Slovakian national living in Ireland since 2005, had travelled to Portlaoise on the day of the offence to visit his mother’s grave. He went to the store and bought flowers, but on the way out was a kiosk containing more flowers and he foolishly took more for his mother’s grave.
“He was certainly not doing the memory of his mother any respect,” said Mr Meagher.
Warning the accused that he could go to prison, Judge Staines convicted and fined him €100
