A convicted rapist serving his sentence in Portlaoise has been given an extra eight months in jail after he assaulted five prison officers, biting three of them.

Lovemore Dube (29), with an address in Cork but currently in Portlaoise Prison, was being brought from his cell in the Midlands Prison on May 3 this year, when he broke free of restraints and assaulted the prison officers.

One prison officer was bitten, but the skin not broken; one was bitten and the skin broken, resulting in his being off work for three days; another officer suffered a cut to the leg; another suffered ligament damage; and one received a bite to the finger, resulting in his taking time off work.

The accused had 38 previous convictions, and was serving a seven-year sentence for rape, imposed in 2013.

Judge Catherine Staines described it as very serious assaults on prison officers, and imposed eight months, consecutive to the sentence Dube is already serving.

Recognisance was fixed in the event of an appeal.
