Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Fine Gael TD for Laois, Charlie Flanagan, has said that the payment of the Christmas bonus this week will help elderly people in Laois.

A Christmas bonus of 85% is to be paid to 1.2 million recipients around the country, in early December.

“In Laois, almost 7,140 elderly people will receive the Christmas bonus, on top of their pension. This will be a very welcome boost and will be paid during the first week of December,” he said.

“In a further positive step for pensioners in Laois the State pension will rise by €5 per week in March. In Budget 2017, the Fine Gael led Government promised an increase of €5 a week on all benefits and we will deliver on that promise.

Minister Flanagan said Fine Gael is working to ensure that everyone benefits from a recovering economy, especially those who need it most.

“This Fine Gael-led Government is taking real and practical steps to use the resources we have, to make the lives of everyone a little better,” he said.
