Mountmellick's Commmunity Groups and businesses gather next weekend to show off what the town has to offer.

This Saturday, December 3, the Mountmellick Enterprise Town event gets underway in Mountmellick Community Sports Centre.

In line with similar events held in Laois the event features a number of local and inter national personalities.

Topping the bill is soccer legend and pundit, John Giles. In keeping with the sports theme, he is part of a sports panel hosted by Jack Nolan, sports commentator.

At 11.30am he is joined by special guest Johnny Giles, Seamus “Cheddar” Plunkett, former Laois hurling manager and Colm “Wooly” Parkinson, former Laois footballer and sports journalist.

After the sports panel, Johnny Giles will present the medals to GAA football Blitz winners, before he meets with exhibitors and attendees of the event.

At 2pm guest motivational speaker and former Governor of Mountjoy Jail, John Lonergan will take to the stage to speak on his experiences in the prison service and with education in Ireland.

Over 40 local clubs, schools, community groups, food producers, crafts-people and businesses are expected to come together to put on a spectacular showcase from 11am to 3pm.

Charlie Flanagan TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade will open the event on Saturday at 11am, and will then present the BizWorld Ireland Awards to young entrepreneurs from some of the local schools.

Entertainment follows throughout the day with performances from the Mountmellick Community School Choir and Irish Dancers and demonstrations from the Mountmellick Gymnastics Club and the Mountmellick Baton Twirlers.

Any young GAA fans will want to arrive early to take part in the Mountmellick GAA Football Blitz which kicks off at 11.15am.

To keep the kids entertained there are lots of family activities planned including the “Kiddies Corner” with free face painting, treats and goodie bags. Santa’s Grotto will be open from 12-2pm and children are welcome to drop in to collect a free Christmas gift or to post their letters to Santa in the special post box provided. Midlands Radio will also be on site all day and there will be spot prizes and a Rugby Tickets Raffle will also take place.

The Enterprise Town Initiative is sponsored by Bank of Ireland and Mountmellick branch manager Carol Dalton is delighted and overwhelmed by the support the event has been getting. “All sectors of the community in the wider Mountmellick area have really gotten behind the event and as a result, we are expecting a truly fantastic showcase on Saturday.”

The organising committee is encouraging everyone to come along to Mountmellick Enterprise Town to enjoy this FREE event. For all the updates go to the Facebook Page ‘Mountmellick Enterprise Town’.

This free community orientated event will be jam packed with prizes, Christmas treats and seasonal entertainment for all the family.
