A weekend of Christmas fun in Mountmellick kicks off when the town lights up

Not even the grinch could avoid catching the festive spirit in Mountmellick this weekend, with three days of activities lined up

Mountmellick's famed 65 ft Christmas tree is set to be officially switched on again at 8pm on Friday evening, just in time to get home for the Late Late Toy Show.

The tree along with the town's festive street lights will form the perfect backdrop to a weekend of festive fun in the Laois town.

On Saturday morning December 3, the Community and Enterprise Town Expo opens its doors, in the Sports Complex at the community school.

Running from 11am to 3pm, there will be a kiddies corner and Santa's grotto for the smallies, while stalls will be on show displaying local clubs, schools, community groups, food producers and businesses, highlighting all it has to offer.

Special guests are Johnny Giles and John Lonergan, with lots of spot prizes all day. The event is supported by Bank of Ireland.

That day the Christmas Tree committee will also be holding their flag day, to raise money for their annual fuel donations to the elderly, and presents for young children.

Then on Sunday, it's time for Mountmellick Christmas Fair from 1pm to 6pm, when 50 stalls will pop up all around the Christmas tree, offering a quality range of festive gifts, crafts and tasty treats, with local choirs and performers entertaining the crowds, a draw for some giant Christmas hampers, and festive mulled wine to keep those fingers and toes warm.
