Portlaoise man was shouting armed with a stick

A Portlaoise man has been given community service in lieu of prison for behaving aggressively in a housing estate armed with a stick.

At last week's Portlaoise District Court, Peter McDonagh (39), Clonroosk View, Portlaoise, was charged with threatening or abusive behaviour, and possession of an offensive weapon.

Detective Garda Conor Egan gave evidence that on May 26 this year, the gardaí received a report of a fight in a local housing estate and when the gardaí arrived they found the accused with another male, shouting and holding a stick.

The accused had previous convictions, including four public order offences, criminal damage, 17 copyright offences, and offences under the road traffic act.

Defence, Ms Louise Troy said her client has two children in a boxing club and he is also involved in the club, being very much involved with his children.

Judge Staines imposed 150 hours’ community service in lieu of six months in jail, and the matter was put back to February 8 for a community service report.
