A woman has been fined for bringing cannabis into Portlaoise Prison.

Christine O’Connor (28), St Michael’s Avenue, Tipperary, was charged with drug possession, and supply into prison.

Inspector Ollie Baker gave evidence that on November 2 this year, the accused was visiting her partner in Portlaoise Prison and was detected by prison staff with cannabis resin valued €25.

She had no previous convictions.

Defence, Ms Louise Troy said her client, a lone parent with two children, had been visiting her partner, who was serving a ten-year sentence for burglary. Her partner asked her to bring the drug in, saying that he was under pressure.

Ms Troy said her client was extremely apologetic.

The accused was convicted and fined €200.
