Portlaoise man had knife and drugs in car

A Portlaoise man has been given a jail sentence for having a knife.

Patrick Kerry (19), Cherrygrove, Knockmay, Portlaoise, was charged with no driving licence or insurance, and possession of drugs and a knife.

Inspector Maria Conway gave evidence that on June 27, 2017, the accused was stopped by gardaí driving at Harpurs Lane, Portlaoise.

The accused was very nervous and did not have a driving licence, insurance or learner’s permit. The car was seized and searched, and in the driver’s side was located a knife and a grinder with €20 of cannabis.

The accused had previous convictions and is currently serving a sentence on other matters.

For no insurance, the accused was fined €300 and disqualified from driving for two years.

For the possession of knives he was sentenced to four months in prison. The other two charges were taken into consideration.
