Portlaoise man charged with criminal damage at local hotel

A Portlaoise man charged with causing criminal damage in a local hotel has requested CCTV evidence in the case.

At last week’s sitting of the district court in Portlaoise, Christian Lawless (24), with an address at Rossvale, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, was charged with criminal damage, at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on a date between December 13 and December 15, 2015.

In a separate matter, the accused was also charged with being intoxicated at the Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, on July 23, 2017.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that there was a guilty plea being entered to the intoxication charge, but she was seeking CCTV footage in the case regarding the criminal damage.

Sgt JJ Kirby said that given the date of the charge, December 2015, there was no CCTV footage available.

Sgt Kirby said the alleged offence happened in a hotel room, so there wouldn’t be any CCTV in the hotel room anyway.

Ms Fitzpatrick referred to the statement of the alleged injured party and said that CCTV formed the basis of the identification of the accused.

Judge Fiona Lydon said she would make an order for CCTV footage, but advised the State that they would need more formal proofs for the next day in court.

The matter was put back to June 7 next with the accused remanded on continual bail.

The intoxication charge was also adjourned to that date.
