Probation act for theft of a phone

A Portlaoise man has been placed on a probation bond for stealing a phone.

Patrick Kerry, 19, 65 Hillview Drive, Knockmay, Portlaoise, was charged with theft.

When the case first came before the court last November, Sgt Jason Hughes gave evidence that on June 14, 2016, at Main Street, Portlaoise, the accused entered a phone shop and stole a phone, running out of the shop with it.

Noting that the offence happened two years ago, Judge Staines asked what the delay had been.

Sgt Hughes said the accused had to be identified from CCTV footage and had then spent time in prison.

Defence, Mr Barry Fitzgerald said the accused was now doing very well and had been in throes of an addiction at the time.

Judge Staines adjourned the case for a probation report and €200 compensation.

When the case returned to court last week, the accused was placed on a probation bond for 12 months.
