Roundabout needed for 'forgotten area' of town

A roundabout is needed for the “forgotten area” of Portlaoise, the Mountmellick Road.

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald called on the council to install roundabouts on the Mountmellick Road at Harpurs Lane/Dunnes Stores/Ballyfin Road.

Mr Farhan Nasiem, acting senior executive engineer, said that at present there is no funding available for design and construction of these roundabouts. Laois County Council road section will be submitting a proposal to the TII safety engineer to fund these projects in 2019.

“I despair, this is going on years,” said Cllr Fitzgerald. “When Dunnes Stores applied for permission I put in a submission for a roundabout, there’s a huge big car park and it’s empty most of the time, we could take a corner off it. We have to put this road as a priority.”

Supporting the motion, Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley said: “It's the forgotten area of the town. More houses will go into that area, the TII doesn’t seem to have the Mountmellick Road on their radar at all.”
