Laois firefighters could get chainsaw practice pruning trees

The fire brigade could get some practice in the use of chainsaws by pruning overgrown trees, suggested Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

At the recent meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District, he proposed that the council request Killaree Lighting to prune the trees at the Tiles Housing Estate, Portlaoise Road, Abbeyleix, as the trees have overgrown the lights.

He was informed in a written response from Mr Farhan Nasiem, acting senior executive engineer, road design, that the maintenance of green areas and trees is the responsibility of housing estates.

The tree branches around lights will be trimmed, said Mr Nasiem.

Cllr Fennelly said the problem was around electricity pole and the council couldn’t expect residents to be up near them.

He asked whether the pruning of the trees could be used as a training exercise for firefighters in the use of chainsaws, but acknowledged that this was a long shot.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley said this was a problem in so many estates and a survey needed to be done.

She also highlighted the problem of footpaths being wrecked by the roots of trees.
