Head on crash on M7 roundabout

An elderly Rathdowney man has been disqualified from driving after he crashed head on with another car while driving on the wrong side of a motorway roundabout.

James Stanley (79), Beckfield, Rathdowney, was charged with careless driving on June 23, 2018, at M7 Junction 17, at Togher, Portlaoise.

Sgt JJ Kirby gave evidence that the accused was involved in a head on collision, with both driver’s airbags deployed. Sgt Kirby said the accused went around a roundabout on the incorrect side and crashed into a woman who had triplets in the car with her. Sgt Kirby said there were minor injuries.

A woman accompanying the accused to court told Judge Staines that the accused had not driven since, nor had he renewed his insurance. The accused was fined €200 and disqualified from driving for one year.
