ATHLETICS - 'Streets of Portlaoise' race to become first leg of new Kia Road Series 2018

Members of Portlaoise AC at the launch of their 'Streets of Portlaoise' race, which will take place on St Patrick's Day once again this year.

Portlaoise AC are introducing a few new changes to one of the largest road races in the midlands. The club are delighted to announce that the 'Streets of Portlaoise' will be first in the Kia Road Series 2018 which compromises of eight road races all over Ireland run in conjunction with Pop up Races, and will see the winning male and female winning a Kia car.

This year sees the introduction of a new 5k race route to cater for the increase in the numbers of runners taking part each year and we are also pleased to announce that this year the course will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the event.

The race will now start close to the old Centrepoint Shopping Centre on the Mountrath road, run down Main Street before heading out the ridge road, back up Mountmellick road, right up Harpurs Lane and down the Mountrath road. The finish line will remain at the bottom of Main Street Portlaoise.

Over 120 people have signed up for this year’s couch to 5k run by Portlaoise A.C. and are all in training for the 5k on St. Patrick’s morning.

The race committee would like to thank our sponsors who have come on board again this year to support the race: People First Credit Union, Midlands Park Hotel, Downey’s Autostop, Mulhall’s Supervalu and Shaws Department Stores.

There will now be over €2000 in prizes along with new course record prizes for the first male and female will definitely attract some of the top runners from all over the country. Club team prizes have also been introduced for the first time and this will see local clubs from all over Laois and the midlands battle it out over this fast 5k.

This race is chipped timed and the entry fee remains at €15. All finishers will receive a souvenir medal. Participants can enter online at www.popupraces.ie

Please note that numbers for this race will be capped and it is advised that people register online early to avoid disappointment.

Maps of the course route along with pictures of our new medal, race top and prizes are available on our website: sop.portlaoiseathleticclub.com

There will also be three kids fun runs U7, U9 & U12 taking part before the main race with all children receiving a medal and Easter egg. The cost for this is €3 per child and registration takes place from 9am in the Heritage Hotel. Information and timetables for these fun runs can be found on our website.

So the perfect Saint Patrick’s day might look a bit like this: Run the Streets of Portlaoise 5k in the morning, watch the local parade and finish off the day by watching Ireland beat England in the 6 nations! (Fingers crossed!)
