The third meeting of the season between the Portlaoise Panthers and Tullamore U-12 girls teams took place last Saturday.
Having previously won one game each it was going to be a very competitive game from the start. Portlaoise got off to a nervous start and went two scores down very early on.
However, the five girls who started, Shannon Quigley, Niamh Murphy, Jessica Beere, Leah Houlihan and Sadhbh Bergin kept focused on the game, hard fought balls were won in defence and the Panthers were very unlucky not to score more in the first quarter. Panthers finished the first quarter 5-3 down.
The second quarter team for the Panthers was Ella Hanamy, Teagan O'Reilly, Stephanie Abrama, Clodagh Power and Ella Flanagan. As in the first quarter the game was very competitive.
Every rebound was hard fought for and strong attacking by Portlaoise tested the Tullamore defence. The Panthers were able to turn around their deficit and finished at half time leading by six points.
Sophie Delaney and Gabby Davis were introduced for the third quarter and added to the competitive determination of the Panthers. Portlaoise through good team work and excellent passing forged ahead and built a comfortable lead going into the final quarter.
Not content with their lead the Panthers continued to fight for every ball and despite Tullamore playing a full court press, Portlaoise scored well.
Once the game was out of Tullamore reach Portlaoise were happy to run the clock down and were deserving winners finishing with a score of 35-19.
