Portlaoise will host an international competition later this month, when the IKMF European Kettlebell Marathon Championships will take place between May 25 to 27.
The event will see over 120 athletes from 14 countries come together to compete in St Mary's CBS, Borris Rd, Portlaoise. Men, women and juniors of all ages will attend. This will be the largest European Championships to date
Laois Girevoy Kettlebell Club coach Dermot O’Neill put in a proposal to the IKMF president last year and managed to secure the competition through the Association of Kettlebell Sport Ireland. This is a great honour for the Association, and lots of ground work has been done to ensure that this a successful event.
Spectators are welcome over the weekend – there is no cover charge. There will be a large Irish team competing including lots of local athletes from Laois Girevoy Club, and Mountrath Kettlebell Club so come along and show your support.
The opening ceremony will take place at 9.30am on Saturday 26th May, and the competition will run until Sunday evening when the medal ceremony takes place.
Visitors will be staying in various accommodations around the town, many of whom will never have been to Laois before.
The organising committee would like to thank all the sponsors to date, Shaws Portlaoise, iRepair Shop and the Nike Outlet, Kildare Village. Thanks also to the local hotels and B&B’s .
The support from Laois Tourism and Laois Sports Partnership has been great and both have been instrumental in putting it all together.
All are welcome to attend the event, so please join in on the day and help to cheer on the Irish team.
