Winning start for Panthers trio at FIBA European U-16 Championships

It was a winning start for the Portlaoise Panthers trio of Shauna Dooley, Ciara Byrne and Gillian Wheeler in the FIBA European U-16 championships in Montenegro today.

Ireland played out a thrilling contest with Luxembourg, taking the game to overtime before the girls in green won on a scoreline of 73-68.

All three Panthers stars saw significant court time, as Shauna Dooley chipped in with two rebounds and two assists, Ciara Byrne added two rebounds, one assist, one point and one steal, while Gillian Wheeler added two points, three rebounds and one assist.

Ireland saw Hazel Finn and Fatimah Akorede lead the scoring with 22 and 20 respectively, as they got their tournament off to the perfect start.

Next up is a clash with Romania tomorrow (Friday).
