Mark O'Boyle and Liam Delaney from The Heath GC.
The Heath Golf Club duo of professional Mark O'Boyle and captain Liam Delaney are heading for Spain this November after a brilliant victory in the SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge on Monday.
The competition, held in Seapoint Golf Club in Louth, attracted some of the top professionals and captains from around the country.
A brilliant back nine from The Heath duo proved to be the difference, as they came home in 25 points to register a total of 45 points on the day. That was matched by Carlow Golf Club, but The Heath took the win on countback, as Carlow had 24 points on the back nine.
The win over Carlow is all the more impressive given that their club professional is Damien McGrane, a former European Tour member and winner, who took up the role in Carlow last year.
The highlight of The Heath's round was an eagle-two on the par four 13th hole, while Liam Delaney sank the all-important birdie put on the 18th to cap off a brilliant round of golf.
O'Boyle and Delaney now qualify for the overall final, which has a purse of £22,000, and will be held in Arabella Golf Resort in Mallorca, the largest golf resort in Spain. The event takes place on November 6th and 7th.
Speaking to the PGA website after the win, The Heath GC captain Liam Delaney, a retired guard, said. "We put a bit of a sprint on, I finally woke up on the back nine. I’d seen Mark play some brilliant golf beforehand. He must have inspired me. I was thrilled with the putt at the 18th, we needed that."
“I hadn’t been playing that well recently but I enjoy the links courses so I got a bit of a lift from that. That helped me a lot on the back nine, I had concentrate more with the wind blowing. But the greens were just beautiful at Seapoint.”
