Last month saw the official start to the new season of tennis and competitions at Abbeyleix Tennis Club, with our open day event.

The event attracted in excess of 50 competitors from both Abbeyleix and various clubs around the midlands and a great day was had by all. The mixed doubles event included an A, B and C section. Congratulations to Gemma Ogilvie and her partner Leo Tinkler who were overall winners and were awarded with a perpetual shield for highest points scored on the day. Winners on the day were as follows:

A Section

Winners - Fiona Bonham/Malcolm McDonald; Runners Up - Jessie Owens/David Brophy

B Section

Winners - Gemma Ogilvie/Leo Tinkler; Runners Up - Sandy Russell/ Eoin Keenan

C Section:

Winners - Aine Doyle/Breda Connell; Runners Up - Michelle Fitzpatrick/ Patrick Gaughan

We would like to thank all those who participated in the event and to our main sponsor for the event, the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel.

The annual Castle Durrow shield was held on May 25. This event for our junior members always sees a strong turnout and this year was no exception. Eoin Keenan and his partner Eliza Nuzum overcame their opponents Philip Walton and Darragh Hosey in an exciting final, and a BBQ was enjoyed by all following the event.

Again, a bit thank you to all those who participated in the event and to Peter and Shelly Stokes of Castle Durrow, our sponsor for the event.

The next club competition will be the club doubles which commences on 12th June followed by the club singles in July. The next open event will be the Dickie McDonald 1 day event on Sunday, 22nd July. Entries will be taken closer to the time and interested participants can keep up to date by visiting our website www.abbeyleixtennis.com
