The eagerly anticipated second leg quarter final encounter between Ryan’s A team from Portlaoise and Lennon’s B from Durrow was the highlight of the latest round of games in the Laois Pool League.
Lennon’s had managed to record a shock victory against the tournament favourites in the first leg with an 8-7 win proving any team can win on any given night in this league. At one stage in that game the men from Durrow held a 6-1 lead.
Unfortunately for Lennon’s, Ryan’s didn’t falter in their second leg encounter coming out 9-1 winners on the night and going through to the LPPL Cup semi finals on an aggregate score line of 16-9.
Mark White was the only Lennon’s player on the night who won a frame although it was said that five frames had gone all the way to the black so maybe the score line could have been a little different if the run of the baize had went their way. Lennon’s B team now play the gatehouse in the LPPL Shield (B finals) so have a second chance at grasping some silverware this year.
The mighty Ryan’s A took on Napper’s A team from Stradbally in their LPPL Cup semi final first leg on Wednesday last. This was expected to be a close encounter but the game against Lennon’s must have made them stronger as they came out 11-4 winners on the night and are hot favourites now to make the final needing only five more frames in their second leg encounter against Napper’s. The boys from Stradbally though will not go down without a fight so it will be an interesting match.
In the other Cup fixtures, The Horseshoe from Abbeyleix defeated The Gatehouse on an aggregate score of 16-12. This had been another close encounter as only one frame separated them after the first leg when the horseshoe went away from that with an 8-7 victory. The Horseshoe now progress to the Cup semi finals where were due to play Ryan’s B team last night (Tuesday) in Ryan’s at 9pm.
In the LPPL Shield (B finals), The Final Furlong took on the Phoenix Inn. At the time of going to press no score was received but latest scores can be found on the facebook page.
In the other shield fixtures, Lennons A team rounded off victory over the Hawthorn Bar running out 16-9 winners on aggregate, Lennons A had lead 11-4 going into the second leg.
The Hawthorn have been a great team this year in terms of punctuality and sportsmanship and hope to see them back next year stronger and more hungry for victory.
