Hockey action heats up in Abbeyleix

Any remaining cobwebs from the Winter break are gone with three age groups in action in weather that was well and truly wintry.

All even at U-12 Blitz in Kilcock

Abbeyleix u12s were in action at the West Leinster blitz hosted byNorth Kildare in Kilcock

Abbeyleix had two teams in an overall entry of 20 teams. Unfortunately the conditions were dreadful with driving rain and very cold. However these did not take from a good day’s hockey with Abbeyleix holding their own with two wins, two draws and two defeats and this in spite of a number of regulars being unavailable.

Nicola Roe, Andrea Caldbeck, Sarah Clegg, Ben Barrett and Catriona Rafter stood out on the day and the performances of John Moynan, Jess Barrett, Jane Caldbeck, Marlese Ponsioen, Amy Moynan, Melissa Odlum, Alyson Shaw and Amy Fingleton were also due a mention particularly in light of the conditions.

Big thanks to North Kildare for hosting the event in a fantastic facility and for the refreshments during and after the blitz.

Abbeyleix U-16s suffer last minute defeat to Tullamore

Abbeyleix u16s played their third league match against Tullamore 2 at the Tullamore Harriers Club.

Abbeyleix had a strong start to the match and were soon rewarded with a goal from their centre forward, Philip Black.

However Tullamore had levelled the score with a goal half way through the first half. Shortly after the half time break, Tullamore scored again, taking them into the lead.

Abbeyleix didn’t lose heart an scored their second goal, coming again from Philip Black. However one minute from the end, Tullamore scored their third and final goal from a short corner, winning the match 3-2.

It was an impressive all-round team performance on the day in persistent heavy rain, sleet and at times hail. The team included Eliza Nuzum, Nicola Moynan, Alison Harvey, Kate O’Hara, Ruth O’Hara, Alanna Phelan, Ella Barrett, Susan Sherman, Pauline Dunne, Aoife Luttrell, Laura Holohan, Aimhirgin Byrne, Fiona O’Connell and Phillip Black. Big thanks to Declan and Audrey and to Tullamore Hockey Club for their hospitality.

Great win for U-14s in West Leinster Hockey Cup

The u14 squad travelled to Naas to take on the home team in the West Leinster knock out Cup and goals from Louise Cantwell & Caitlin Pretorius insured a well deserved victory in driving rain and sleet.

Superior team work on the day was the decisive factor in victory with some excellent inter passing whether going forward in search of goals or in defending their lines.

Caitlin Pretorius, Grace Flanagan and Robert Maher led the way and were closely followed by another fine performance from Jack O Connell in goals and from Roisin Dwyer, Carla Ponsioen, Rachel Black, Tara Hyland, Luke Ponsioen, Sorcha Maloney, Louise Cantwell & Sarah Fingleton.

The training & skills programme being used by Michael & Paul looks to be bearing fruit.
