Juvenile Training

Training takes place every Monday at 6.30pm to 7.30pm in the Portlaoise Running Track adjacent to Portlaoise College. Entrance and Car Park off Harpurs Lane. Why not get along and give it a go! Contact Ger Goode on 083-1077421 and David Finn on 085-7625382 for more information. Children from the age of 5 welcome, €2 per child and max €5 per family.

Juvenile Training Friday Evening

With numbers increasing there will be a new training date for the over 8s - this will take place every Friday at 6.30 to 7.30, also in the Portlaoise Running Track adjacent to Portlaoise College. Entrance and Car Park off Harpurs Lane.

Adult Training

Adult Training for all levels takes place every Sunday in Emo Court at 10.30am with runners meeting up in the car park, and with the days closing in every Thursday evening in Portlaoise meeting in St Fintans car park across from the prison at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome so why not dust off those trainers, come along and get active!

Get fit with the Ballyfin AC girls

Why not get along to the Portlaoise Running Track adjacent to Portlaoise College on Monday evenings at 6.30pm, ask for Ger Goode and join in in some light training to get you up and running. For more details contact Ger Goode on 083-1077421.

Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District


There is training Cullahill GAA Grounds at 7pm each Monday evening. Anybody with an interest in athletics/general fitness regardless of age or experience is most welcome. All levels of fitness are catered for. We would encourage and welcome parents especially to bring their children and maybe even participate with them in becoming fit for life.

There will be a group run in Cullenagh each Monday evening at 7pm. This is an easy run on hills.

There is training each Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at Ballyroan GAA grounds. Anybody with an interest in athletics/general fitness regardless of age or experience is most welcome. All levels of fitness are catered for. We would encourage and welcome parents especially to bring their children and maybe even participate with them in becoming fit for life.

There is a tempo run on hills scheduled for 09.45 each Saturday morning at Oakvale Woods in Stradbally.

There will be a group training run for adults organised for each Sunday morning. Next sunday the run will begin at the Library in Abbeyleix at 9.30am. Distance can be varied depending on ones current endurance but the emphasis will be on an easy pace to suit everyone.

Niamh takes bronze

Niamh Quinn, Scoil Chriost Ri and Portlaoise AC achieved third place in the National U-18 Combined Events final in Santry. She qualified for the final having finished second in the Leinster Schools Competition a fortnight ago. Her national bronze medal secures her a place on the Irish international team which competes in Scotland next December.

This is Niamh’s second international cap.

In Santry last Saturday, Niamh performed particularly well in the 800m, the high jump and the long jump. She won the 800m and achieved PBs in both the High jump (1.58m) and the long jump(4.95m). Niamh is eligible to compete at this Intermediate level again next year.

Portlaoise Primary Schools Cross Country

A Primary Schools Cross Country competition for schools in the greater Portlaoise area was held at Ratheniska GAA grounds on Wednesday. Two hundred and sixty children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes took part. The organisers of the competition, Portlaoise AC, would like to thank the club for the use of the facilities on the day. The dressing rooms were much appreciated when the skies opened with two races still to be run.

Meet ‘N’ Train

The Portlaoise Athletic Club ‘Meet N Train’ programme continues each week. Come along to the track on Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm if you are interested in continuing or starting training. This programme is also open to new members so spread the word and bring a friend. Membership forms will be available at the sessions.


Training sessions

Seniors - Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at track. Saturday in Oakvale, meet at 10.45, run at 11.00. Sunday in Emo, Meet at 10.15, run at 10.30 sharp.

Juveniles - Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at track for sprints, long jump, hurdles, distance. Sunday 10.15am at Emo for 11yrs+

Throws - Sunday @ 10am and Tuesday @ 6pm.

St Abban’s

St Abban’s club Member’s Draw

Your support is very much appreciated for our forthcoming Member’s Draw. The first draw will take place on Sat 13th October in the Glenside, Killeshin. There’s €6,500 in prizes with tickets costing €30 spread over three draws. Tickets are now on sale from club committe members or call down to the clubhouse. St Abban’s AC Fit4Life

Are you finding the evenings long and you’re looking to take up a new hobby? why not come along to St Abban’s track on Monday at 7pm and Wednesday at 7.30pm where you can walk/ jog or run with other people with similar fitness levels on our all weather, fully lit track. The training nights will be led by Ben and Jimmy and it’s for one hour and costs just €2. All are welcome to come along and go at your own pace. It’s a great way of getting and staying fit where you can avail of the company of other like minded walkers/runners. Just turn up on the night. Club Autumn Newsletter

Club newsletter is now available and will be distributed at training. The newsletter consists many items of interest to club members and informs all members of training schedules, race fixture lists, items of interest and upcoming St Michaels events. Ask trainers for a copy of the newsletter at the next training session.

Winter Training Schedule

Senior Training has moved to McCann Park Portarlington for the Winter months Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7pm. Each session is €2. Wes Reilly trains the Fit for Life group on Tuesday and Aidan Mullally on Thursday evenings. Noel Coss trains the other groups on both evenings. Juvenile Training takes place on Monday and Thursday evening at 6pm in McCann park.


The dark evenings are approaching please ensure that you stay safe while training on the roads and footpaths during the dark winter months. Wear high visibility vests and make sure you also have reflective arm bands and lights. Where possible arrange to train with a running partner or group. Be safe be seen.

Fit for Life Group

Our very talkative fit for life group continue to impress, with most of our fit for life members now well established runners who are achieving great results every time they turn up at training sessions and every time they compete in a race. Well done to this group keep up the hard work and stick with it.

Sunday Morning Run

The long run on Sunday morning continues at the winter scheduled time of 10am. If any club member wants to take the lead on the organising of the Sunday morning run please let a member of the committee know or contact Aidan 087-6968844.

5K time trials

A series of 5k Time Trials (on the road) will take place once every month at Emo Court over the Autumn/Winter period (starting in October). The first time trial will take place on Sunday 14th October at 10:30am. This is a great opportunity to get your accurate 5k time and to track your 5k performance over the Autumn/Winter months. Bring a friend along. No charge. This series will consist of 5 x 5k runs from Oct to Feb. Contact Aidan (087) 6968844.
