The Portlaoise Panthers Girls U-18s team had a very positive start to their season last weekend when they headed to Kilcullen to play their opening tournament.

With coach Leanne Hayes at the helm the girls played Clonaslee in their first game. Clonaslee were last years league winners and so the players knew they would have to be at the top of their game to come away with a win. The girls battled hard throughout a very physical game and came away with an unexpected but much deserved win.

In the second game they played against Athlone and again the girls were aware that a tough game lay ahead. Despite showing the same fighting spirit as in the first game, they could not stop some excellent Athlone scoring throughout and in the last quarter they made a comeback but could not bridge the 12 point deficit.

It was a brilliant opening tournament for the girls and they showed great potential for much success in the season ahead. Coach Leanne Hayes was thrilled with many of the girls performances and is excited about the upcoming games. The future is definitely bright for ladies basketball in the town.
