Team Silvers kept their unbeaten run intact on Sunday night with a hard fought victory over local rivals BC Svyturys which keeps them out in front in the Midland League.
BC Svyturys came out fighting from the tip-off and showed an exhibition of shooting in the first quarter with captain Gediminas Simkus draining three three-pointers and Modestas Petruzis adding one of his own from long range.
This put Team Silvers on the back foot early on with the home side experimenting with their defence to counteract Svyturys outside threat. At the other end Team Silvers looked to make use of their height advantage by taking the game inside with Greg Dunne and Pierce Fagan notching up scores under the basket. Team Silvers found themselves six points down by the end of the quarter after further baskets from Simkus.
The second quarter saw the away side pulling further ahead early on with Petruzis finding gaps in the Silvers defence and he added two baskets and a free throw to his personal tally.
The Panthers clubmen responded well and began to work the ball around in offence while Peter Duignan finished strongly scoring six points on the trot. Anthony Dunne and Gary Donnelly entered the game and quickly got up to the pace of the game registering their first scores.
Further scores from Dunne brothers Anthony and Greg brought Team Silvers back into the game before Svyturys replied through Evaldas Bertulis to give them a five point lead at half time.
Team Silvers came out in the third quarter focussed on containing Svyturys outside game through a tight man-to-man defence. The home side held Svyturys to thirteen points while nothing up twenty five points Gary Donnelly and Peter O’Sullivan benefiting on the fast break after some brilliant defence.
Svyturys kept coming back at Team Silvers and again it was Simkus and Dovydas from beyond the three point line doing the damage. Team Silvers were now on top and took an eight point lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a low scoring affair with both sides on top in defence. Both teams went score for score throughout the quarter with Svyturys never really threatening to pull back the lead to take victory.
Team Silvers experience played a part late on as they began to use the clock to their advantage and were clinical from the free throw line to claim the win and remain unbeaten in the Midland League.
