U-14s too strong for Kilkenny Stars

The Portlaoise boys U-14 team played host to Kilkenny in the Kilkenny Area League Competition.

Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Dylan Phelan and Darren Moore. Kilkenny were slow to get on the scoreboard despite good play from Ben Cummins and Jack Walsh. As the quarter went on Portlaoise were dominating with their two big men Rian O Connell and Jakub Zaruski putting points on the scoreboard.

The second quarter saw the home club keep the scoreboard ticking over with fine shooting from Gary Morrissey and Trevor Swayne. Portlaoise took control of the game with Niall Carey and Ben O Reilly putting in good performances to see them open up a 10-point lead at the half time break.

Portlaoise continued to dominate after the break with scores from Rian O’Connell and Niall Carey. Kilkenny had good performances from Shane Purcell and Cormac Rafter but failed to score on a number of occasions down the floor. Portlaoise on the other hand were growing in confidence and opened up a comfortable 15-point gap thanks to baskets from Rian O’Connell and Dylan Phelan.

As the last quarter got underway both teams seemed to relax with the final outcome in little doubt, both played good running basketball with Jacob Zaruski and Darren Moore scoring for the home club. Portlaoise finished the game strong with baskets from James Phelan and Pierce Bolger Hinds to see them go on to a well deserved win to remain at the top of the league table.
