The Laois Marlins Swimming Club brought home an impressive total of twelve medals from the National Aquatic Centre last weekend, where the Comorant Short Course Gala was held.
The club’s newest members Ellen Donoghue and Toni Dolan, both aged 8, swam great races to take medals in their first ever gala. Ellen won silver in Breaststroke and bronze in Butterfly, while Toni won bronze in Breaststroke, finishing 0.1 second behind her friend.
The U-12 Relay team of Mathew Doyle, Thomas Martin, Eoin Donoghue and Conor Donoghue won gold in a very exciting race. Thomas Martin and Conor Donoghue also took bronze in Butterfly, while Eoin Donoghue added another 3 medals to his very impressive haul won over the last year- silver in Backstroke and Breaststroke and bronze in Freestyle.
According to Club coach Debbie Murphy. “This was a great day for Laois Marlins. We had 30 children swimming” she said, “and every one of them swam with pride for their club, shaving seconds off personal bests in all races.”
If there were an award for ‘Performance of the Gala’, it would have to go to 12 year old Aidan Nealon, who shaved an incredible 12 seconds from his three events - Backstroke, Freestyle and Breaststroke.
Training at the club continues on Monday and Friday evenings, with optional morning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the Portlaoise Leisure Centre. New members are welcome. Contact Club Secretrary Violet Nealon for more information 086-8953209.
