Laois council might be about to spend a penny on new public/private 'convenience' for Portlaoise

Portlaoise is line to get a new public toilet or as Laois County Council calls a 'public convenience' under a contract with could see the facility being operated privately.

The council has invited expressions of interest in for a design, build and operation contract of a new Public Convenience situated in Lyster Square, Portlaoise.

The council says the 'Convenience' is to be constructed within the existing footprint of the old Public Toilet facility situated in a building which includes a tourist office and a bookshop.

Stage one of the council's process is the securing a suitably qualified contractor for the design of and upgrade to this facility and for the operation/maintenance and cleaning of the new facility.

Depending on the outcome from Stage 1, the council says it may proceed to Stage 2 which will involve the inviting tenders from  contractors.

Stage 2 will require the submission of detailed plans, specifications and costings for further consideration and may be the subject of negotiation the council.

Under an urban renewal plan for Portlaoise and Lyster Square, consultants recommended building a unique landmark building.
