A privately developed housing estate in Laois is finally close to being taken in charge, over 20 years since it was built but left with unfinished roads.

Broderick’s housing estate in Knockiel, Rathdowney still has issues with footpaths and unfinished road surfaces.
Cllr John King tabled a motion at the November meeting of the Mountmellick Borris-in-Ossory Municipal District, to ask the council to take it on.

“These houses were built in 1995, some people have moved out, others moved in, some are sold, I’d like to see work started as soon as possible,” he said.

Cllr King said that the builder was no longer in business.

“The Broderick family is no longer in the building game, I’d like to see this come to a head,” Cllr King said.

The reply from Senior Planner Angela McEvoy was that the estate will be advertised for taking in charge before the end of 2018, with a view to completing the process in 2019.

“This will give the council the opportunity to carry out the necessary works subject to availability of funding. The public lighting is currently being maintained by Laois County Council,” she said.
