Laois County Councillor and local election candidate has spoken to one of America's best-known politicians about democracy and women in politics.

Cllr Thomasina Connell met with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Emerita of the US House of Representatives when she was awarded the Fulbright Ireland Public Service Award recently at the residence of the US Ambassador in Dublin.

“I was honoured to have the opportunity to meet Nancy Pelosi and had a brief but engaging conversation with her about women in politics and the importance of protecting democracy across the world.

“Ms Pelosi is an impressive politician, now 84 years old and plans to seek re-election. She has worked tirelessly for healthcare, climate action, equality and human rights throughout her career, having been elected to Congress in 1987 for the Democratic Party.

“She spoke at length about the importance of democracy across the world and emphasised her disdain for Russia and its war against Ukraine. She has been heavily critical of President Donald Trump and his policies in her role as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“I was interested to hear Nancy Pelosi give her own insight into elective politics and leadership; she is clearly a firm believer in more diversity at the table which is essential for balanced decision making.

"It was a very special evening to have the chance to meet this exceptional politician who, throughout her career has been a wonderful friend to Ireland and a champion of women in politics, Cllr Connell concluded.

The Fine Gael councillor is hoping to win one of seven seats from the Portlaoise Municipal District on Laois County Council at June's local elections.
