Tommy Mulligan is contesting is first election.
What are your priorities?
I want to highlight and address the lack of amenities and recreational areas in the district and also the shortage of enrolment places in special needs classes for those children who are desperately in need of appropriate educational placements.
What is the biggest issue facing your area?
There is an incredible amount of residential building happening at the moment in the district. While this is very much welcomed, the provision of amenities has never matched the building of houses. There is a fear we are turning into a ‘concrete jungle’ and this could lead to significant social issues in due course. There is a huge shortage of sporting facilities and recreational areas in the district. I believe if the County Council and private developers are providing houses, they should also be obliged to help provide adequate facilities for the community.
Why do you think you would make a good County Councillor?
My belief is that the right people in the right positions can make a real difference! My involvement in education and with sport and music organisations gives me the opportunity to see first-hand the most pressing issues on the ground. I love the community of Portlaoise and Laois and I’ve a genuine passion and interest in trying to improve the quality of living for all of us, young and old. My ongoing engagement through-out the community, my effective communication skills and my deep understanding of the local issues and needs, ensures that I am well placed for the role. I am passionate about the opportunity to represent my community, and given that chance, I will be a strong voice for the people of Portlaoise Municipal District.
Tommy Mulligan is a candidate in the Portlaoise Municipal District where seven councillors will be elected. In the lead-up to polling day on June 7 we will be featuring profiles on all 47 candidates vying for a seat on Laois County Council.
