What are your priorities?

Ensuring amenities and infrastructure are delivered for our communities is a key priority.
I champion amenities like playgrounds, enhanced sports facilities, additional green spaces, and improved transport links, including bus, rail, and cycleways.
With many young people in Portlaoise, amenities like playgrounds, green spaces, and sports facilities are essential.
I am committed to relocating The Courthouse to the Southern Orbital Route and repurposing the building for community use.
I will continue to highlight local issues at national Government level, particularly regarding health services. In education, I advocate for additional funding for Special Needs Education and school places for all children.

Biggest issue facing your area?
Road maintenance and traffic congestion are daily concerns. I work closely with Laois County Council to improve road infrastructure. With rising traffic volumes, measures include enhanced cycleways and safe pedestrian walkways. The Portlaoise bus service will be delivered by the end of 2024, positively impacting traffic congestion and promoting sustainable travel.

Why do you think you would make a good county councillor?
It has been an enormous privilege to serve as a Councillor on Laois County Council for 5 years, including my term as Cathaoirleach of the County and as Chairperson of Portlaoise. My leadership has brought about real change. I am experienced, knowledgeable and empathetic.
If re-elected, I aim to build on my achievements and continue to serve my community effectively.

Thomasina Connell is a candidate in the Portlaoise Municipal District where seven councillors will be elected. In the lead-up to polling day on June 7 we will be featuring profiles on all 47 candidates vying for a seat on Laois County Council.
