Laois electorate jumps by thousands for local elections

Laois Council figures confirm big increase in registered voters

The number of people eligible to vote at the Local Elections in Laois has risen by more than 5,500 according to Laois County Council.

The local authority confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live that 68,472 people are registered to vote in the council election on June 7. That's a rise of nearly 9% on the 2019 local poll when the total electorate was 62,965. 

The electorate numbers for each local electoral authority area were not revealed, but Portlaoise will have the largest number of eligible voters.

The official population in the county in 2016 was 84,697 at the time of the last local election. This time around the official population is 91,877 based on Census 2016. That's an increase of 8.5%.

Irish citizens and people ordinarily resident in Ireland have the right to vote in local elections.  

A total of 19 candidates will be returned to represent the people of Laois across the county's three municipal districts over the next five years. A total of 47 candidates are going before the people of Laois. Read their profiles in our special local elections section.

Irish and other EU citizens resident in Ireland and aged 18 or over can vote in the European provided they were registered by 20 May 2024.

Voting in the local elections will be held on Friday, 7 June 2024. Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm.
