Portlaoise Guards are satisfied that elderly in the area are not being “overtly targetted.”
“Everyone knows that this is something that is close to my heart and every effort is being made to address crimes on the elderly,” Supt Yvonne Lundon said.
While acknowleding that they were a vulnerable group, she said there was no overt targetting of the elderly in the area.
In her report at the recent Portlaoise Joint Policing Committee, Supt Lundon said there had been a small number of crimes in the last three months where an elderly person had been the victim.
But she once again encouraged the community in general to check on older people.
She said people would soon be filling up their oil tanks for the winter and this was lucrative for criminals.
“It’s important to check and make sure that they are ok, the winter can be a very lonely time for people when it’s dark at 4pm.
