Overhaul in the pipeline
Laois County Council is set to embark on an extensive overhaul of roads in Castletown.
The work envisaged was outlined to county councillors by the council’s engineer for the area at a recent meeting.
Cllr James Kelly, Independent, tabled a motion calling on the local authority to prioritise the L-1620 road in Castletown. He said the work was needed because the roads have had “deteriorated to an extent that pavement cracks and surface roughness are very prevalent”.
He hoped it could be done as part of the 2023 Roads Programme.
Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, initially replied in writing confirming the works.
“Castletown village is included on the 2023 schedule of works. The proposed works will include resurfacing and road marking which will in turn enhance accessibility to the primary school and the De La Salle Centre,” he said.
Cllr Kelly sought clarification on the extent of the works and which parts of the village would be covered.
Mr Kenny said work would be carried out from the De La Salle Centre to the primary school as well as a stretch past the wastewater works and a housing estate.
“I think that’s great,” replied Cllr Kelly.
Laois Offaly TD and Minister of State Seán Fleming is a resident of the village.
Cllr Kelly raised the issue at the recent Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District Meeting.
