Offaly County Council has ordered the closure of a dog breeding operation not far from Laois.
The closure was ordered amid concern the breeding facility posed a serious threat to animal welfare.
In a notice published on Offaly County Council’s website today, the council issued a closure notice under Dog Breeding Establishments Act.
The closure notice is addressed to the establishment of the owner/operator Mr Mark Kirwan, Dereen, Cloneygowan, Co Offaly.

“I am satisfied that the operation of the dog breeding establishment poses a serious and immediate threat to public health or animal welfare, details of which are specified below,” the notice states.
It alleges: ”The premises in which dogs are kept and management of same are not compliant with Section 15 of the Act and associated guidelines applicable to a registered dog breeding establishment."
“Operation of a DBE without a registration or application for same: Premises and operator not registered by Offaly County Council,” it stated.
The notice can be appealed to the District Court.
