ESB's Portlaoise base pivotal as 96 new apprentices sought

The ESB Networks National Training Centre in Portlaoise will play a pivotal role as the company expands, hiring an additional 96 new apprentice electricians in the coming weeks.

“ESB Networks’ National Training Centre in Portlaoise will play a key role in onboarding this year's cohort of apprentices where important parts of their training will be completed,” an ESB spokesperson said.

“The ESB Networks’ National Training Centre in Portlaoise provides approximately 30 weeks of internal training to all apprentices during our four-year programme,” the spokesperson explained.

“ESB Networks’ National Training Centre also plays a significant role in the upskilling of existing apprentices and employees as we continue to deliver our Networks for Net Zero Strategy to futureproof Ireland’s electricity network,” the spokesperson said.

Last October the ESB said it was experiencing "unprecedented" demands for new connections in Laois. At the time, a spokesperson explained that the company had to draft in contract workers to help carry out works.

Now the company is looking for 96 new apprentices. The ESB's four-year paid apprenticeship programme combines college-based learning and hands-on experience within the organisation. Upon completion, apprentices obtain a QQI Advanced Level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate, which is recognised internationally.

Earlier this year, ESB Networks launched its Networks for Net Zero Strategy which outlines its commitment to futureproofing Ireland’s electricity network and making the country’s goal of Net Zero by 2050 a reality.

Managing Director, ESB Networks, Nicholas Tarrant said: “It is a really exciting time to be joining ESB Networks as an apprentice as everyone across the organisation works together to support our transformative drive to achieve the targets set out in our Networks for Net Zero Strategy.

Apprentices play a crucial role in this by ensuring we have the skills and expertise necessary to deliver the electricity network for Ireland’s clean electric future. I look forward to welcoming our new team members later in the year,” he added.

Fourth-year apprentice on the ESB Networks’ programme, Zara Bloomer spoke about her journey with the ESB:

“My experience so far has been hugely positive. The apprenticeship programme is a great opportunity to get on-the-job experience and every day is different. You learn so much through the support of mentors and teammates, and it is great to see how my role can help ESB Networks deliver a net zero future. I would highly recommend both young women and men to apply, you will have no regrets.”

The ESB is recruiting 96 new apprentices. Applications are being accepted online until Tuesday, March 28 at 12pm.

Applicants must be aged 16 or over on, or before, June 1, 2023. Further details of the application requirements are listed on www.esbnetworks.ie/apprenticeships  .
