Sgt Graham Kavanagh
Councillors were given a talk on personal security safety ahead of a Joint Policing Committee meeting in Portlaoise.
Laois Offaly Garda Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Graham Kavanagh issued safety advice to the councillors.
The move follows similar advice issued to politicians who work at a national level in the Dail. Councillors across the country are expected to be given similar advice on personal safety.
Last month Cllr Aisling Moran revealed she had been subjected to death threats after she made controversial remarks at a meeting of Laois County Council.
The advice issued to the local representatives covered harassment, callers to homes, being streetwise and identifying signs of bad behaviour.
The talk was given to all of the elected members of the council.
Speaking at the Joint Policing Committee meeting, Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanely thanked Sgt Kavanagh for the advice.
“He gave some practical and common sense advice for the elected members on personal security and I just want to thank him,” said Cllr Dwane Stanley.
“I think it is only right and proper that we acknowledge the gardai,” she added.
