Laois woman at the nursing helm in Portlaoise.
A Cullohill woman with more than two decades of experience working in the health service is taking the top nursing job at Portlaoise hospital.
The HSE has confirmed that the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise is pleased to announce the appointment of Olivia Lafferty as the new Interim Director of Nursing of the hospital.
A statement said she takes up the post with over 20 years’ experience in hospital and community services. The hospital outlined her experencence.
The hospital said Ms Lafferty trained in Intellectual Disability Nursing in Moore Abbey, Monasterevin followed by General Nursing in Tralee General Hospital. Having worked in Tallaght University Hospital and St Luke's General Hospital Kilkenny, Olivia began working in Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise in 2016 in the position of Assistant Director of Nursing in Medical Service. Most recently she held the role of Quality Risk and Patient Safety Manager.

“I am delighted to commence my new role as Interim Director of Nursing in the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise and I look forward to working with all of the staff and the community of Portlaoise and the surrounding region.
"My main priorities will be to provide quality services to our patients through evidence based care maximising patient outcomes and to support staff learning and growth. I also look forward to working with my community colleagues progressing integrated care initiatives for the benefit of our patients,” she said.
Ms Áine Lynch, Interim Chief Director of Nursing and Midwifery of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group, welcomed her to the post.
"Olivia brings a huge amount of experience in delivering excellent healthcare with an extensive professional portfolio in both nursing and senior leadership roles. I look forward to working with Olivia in delivering the key strategic aims to drive the highest standards of services in Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise,” she said.
Sandra McCarthy stepped down as Director of Nursing in Portlaoise in late 2022 to take up a position at Tallaght Hospital which is also part of the Dublin Midland Hospital Group which includes hospitals in Laois, Kildare, Offaly and Dublin
